Monthly Book Club Favorites

Double Booked book club was initially established as a social book club for my fellow teachers. The format for our club was flexible, we simply started a social media group and posted our reading selections each month. Some DB members already belonged to groups that had a specific book they read together for discussion.

Instead of sticking to just one book each month, this challenge allows members to read what they love—while still participating in a shared group experience through voting and friendly competition.

Double Booked was our way to share ANY book that we enjoyed. No pressure. No required reading. Just book love.

But wouldn’t it be cool to have a book club challenge to see what books your group liked best every month and all-time annual favorite? Why, yes!

How to Run a Book Club Reading Challenge in 3 Steps

1. Read, Read, Read

Book club members read books of their choice, it’s that simple!

Whether your group has one book selection each month to collaboratively read and discuss, book members also read other novels.

Why vote each month?

  • Encourages more reading
  • Introduces new genres and authors
  • Creates built-in discussion topics
  • Helps track favorite books
  • Builds excitement for monthly meetups

How a Book Club Reading Challenge Works

  1. Members read books of their choice each month
  2. Everyone submits their top reads
  3. The group votes on favorites
  4. A monthly winner is selected
  5. At the end of the year, you crown an overall favorite

Celebrate Annual Winner

  • Follow For Grits & Shins on Pinterest to see related book and other party themed posts
  • More Pinterest – You’ll find a wealth of images and sites dedicated to fan fiction and book themes
  • Potluck – Food doesn’t have to be new recipes, creative names and presentation for popular dishes is what makes the impact

2. Collect Book Titles for Voting

At the end of each month, members submit their top five reads from that month. Some readers may only submit their top 3, and that’s ok.

Final Takeaway

A book club reading challenge is one of the easiest ways to boost engagement and create a shared experience—without adding pressure.

By combining individual reading with group voting, you create a system that encourages discovery, conversation, and connection.

Whether your group is small or growing, this challenge can turn your book club into a dynamic, year-long experience.
