This beginner-friendly guide will show you exactly how to host a wine tasting at home, including planning tips, fun games, and printable materials to make your event easy and enjoyable.

Guide to Host Wine Tasting 101

Many times, a winery offers flights of various wines to taste at once. But if you’re a novice, this can be overwhelming and the differences in taste can be difficult to define.

Using The Wine Club book (I found on Amazon) literally gave my friend group a great way to socialize for months, picking a different wine for each month. It’s a sassy read with everything you need to know about wine and the basics of tasting. It includes

  • easy entertaining tips
  • taste testing know how
  • recipes for pairing to each wine

I added a few creative extras to make the event even more fun, I’m happy to share with you! A wine tasting event is easy to organize with few supplies and a great group of family and friends.

How to Host a Wine Tasting (Quick Steps)

It’s easy to get started if you focus on one type of wine for each tasting. This social is typically less stressful. Your guests contribute a bottle and dish for the evening.

  1. Choose a wine theme or type
  2. Invite 5–10 guests
  3. Ask guests to bring a bottle or food pairing
  4. Provide tasting glasses tasting cups (from Amazon) and note sheets (see the PDF download below)
  5. Serve wines in tasting rounds
  6. Add games or blind tasting format for fun
  7. Vote for favorite wines at the end

Even beginners can host a successful tasting with this simple format.

Optional: Guest Favors or Prizes – You can’t go wrong with wine themed accessories: bottle stoppers, wine glasses, bottle openers, coasters, bottle totes

Blind Taste Testing: Add a Twist

By far, this is my favorite way to do wine tastings! This removes brand bias and encourages guests to focus on flavor.

How to Set Up Blind Tasting

  1. Place each wine bottle in a numbered bag
  2. Hide the labels
  3. Pour each wine in tasting rounds
  4. Guests record notes and guesses
  5. Reveal the wines after voting

Guests are often surprised by which wines they prefer.

  • Brown Paper Bags – the most budget friendly!
  • DIY Fabric Wine Bags – my 8th grade sewing class gave me enough skill to make these, so can you!
  • Burlap Wine Bags (from Amazon) – I’ve used these for several gatherings, can also be used for gifting bottles. These navy colored Numbered Wine Bags from Amazon are perfect too

Games Between Rounds

  • Guess the Cork – a classic but so easy to prepare, collect corks and voila
  • Wine BINGO

Planning Your Wine Tasting Selections

Choose a Theme

Keeping the tasting focused helps guests compare wines more easily.

Popular tasting themes include:

  • Red wines only
  • White wines only
  • Rosé tasting
  • Sparkling wines
  • Wines from one region
  • Same grape variety from different brands

For beginners, choosing one type of wine makes the experience less overwhelming.
