Every year during my April birthday month, I plan a Murder Mystery Party for friends. Not only can you find simple kits and scripts online with various theme searches, there are plenty of excellent mystery kit sites that will do most or all of the work for you.

Murder mystery parties combine storytelling, social interaction, and just enough suspense to make an event unforgettable. While they may seem intimidating to host, most of the success comes from thoughtful preparation and a clear plan. This step-by-step guide breaks down how to host a murder mystery party event planning — from choosing a theme to managing gameplay—so you can focus on enjoying the experience along with your guests.

Quick Guide to Murder Mystery Parties

Whether you’re hosting your first murder mystery or want to elevate your next event, this guide will walk you through everything: planning timelines, choosing a theme, assigning characters, preparing clues, organizing food and décor, and managing the flow of the evening.

Why Murder Mystery Parties Are So Fun

Murder mystery parties turn ordinary gatherings into unforgettable experiences. Guests participate actively, become characters, solve puzzles, and interact in ways that traditional parties don’t allow.

These parties are great for:

  • Social clubs or community events
  • Friend groups
  • Family gatherings

Cast of Characters

Characters are the heart of a murder mystery party. This is what separates a mystery party, the interactive component. Guests should receive:

  • A detailed character sheet
  • Background information and goals
  • Costume suggestions

Tips for Character Assignment

  • Assign based on personality or comfort level
  • Include both “major” and “minor” characters

Choosing a Murder Mystery Theme

Themes set the tone of your party. Your theme will influence your characters, décor, food, and clues.

Popular Murder Mystery Themes

These are some of my favorite themes and will include additional posts with details and resources:

  1. Classic Whodunit: Wine & Crime – Elegant evening with formal dress
  2. 1920s Speakeasy – Gangsters, jazz, and hidden secrets
  3. Hollywood or Red Carpet – Celebrities, scandals, and glamour
  4. Fiesta – Amazing location focus, traditional food and custom focus
  5. Holiday Mystery – Christmas, Halloween, or New Year’s murder
  6. Casino Theme – Gambling, High Stakes, dazzling, mafia
  7. Luau – Beach, Polynesian culture, island dress

DIY / Custom Story – Write your own plot or adapt a book/movie

Planning Clues and the Game Flow

A murder mystery party relies on clues to keep guests engaged. Clues should:

  • Be revealed gradually
  • Encourage discussion and deduction
  • Include red herrings for fun

Game Flow Tips

  • Have a facilitator (host or volunteer) to keep things moving
  • Divide the evening into rounds
  • Allow mingling between clue reveals

Décor Tips for Immersion

Décor helps guests feel part of the story. Keep it simple yet immersive:

  • Soft lighting or candles for ambiance
  • Use props related to the mystery theme
  • Set up clue stations around the room

Start with a Murder Mystery Kit

Ready-to-Go Mystery Kits

There are two companies that I typically order complete guides and kits from.

For anyone, these companies provide PDF templates for EVERYTHING you need to prepare and guide you through hosting a murder mystery party.

  • event timeline
  • invites
  • character clues
  • host guide (instructions hide the culprit if the host wants to play)
  • detailed instructions
  • printables

There are also physical print versions of each kit that can be ordered and mailed that are pre-printed and ready to implement for you. These are two of my favorites

Create Your Own – What You Need

  1. Choosing a Theme or Script
    • Pre-written vs DIY
    • Guest count considerations
  2. Invitations & Character Assignments
    • When to assign roles
    • What info to include
  3. Planning Timeline
    • Prep schedule
    • Day-of checklist
  4. Decor & Atmosphere
    • Lighting
    • Table setup
    • Printable elements
  5. Food & Drinks
    • Courses vs buffet
    • Themed naming
    • Timing meals with gameplay
    • PRO TIP: Level up your hosting with a Wine Tasting between rounds of play!
  6. Running the Game
    • Keeping things moving
    • Handling confusion
    • Revealing clues
  7. Wrap-Up & Awards
    • Best actor awards
    • Final reveal
  8. Related Resources
    • SVGs and printables

You don’t have to create new menus for every occasion. Sometimes all you need is a creative name and change up the display to put a new spin on a popular favorite dish like you’ll find in Goodies for Foodies. Try it!

A Few Hosting Tips for Murder Mystery Night

Mystery Night Itinerary

Most ready-made murder mystery kits break down the event and have a general timeline for the event. These are the general basics of the party

  • Prepare the timeline: know when clues are revealed
  • Keep energy high: mix discussion, movement, and refreshments
  • Manage character participation: encourage interaction without forcing it
  • Debrief at the end: reveal the culprit and celebrate participation

Personal Touches

Create a few “extras” to encourage interaction and a little more competition between rounds. It’s totally up to you. For example, in the Cinco de Mayo themed murder mystery party I hosted, I created a “program” flyer for my guests, so they too, knew what to expect throughout the night. Each guest brought a signature version of a margarita for two different blind taste tests between rounds.

Final Takeaways

Hosting a murder mystery party is a fun, interactive way to bring people together. With careful planning—choosing a theme, assigning characters, preparing clues, setting up immersive décor, and offering themed food—you can create a night that guests will remember for years.
