Every year during my April birthday month, I plan a Murder Mystery Party for friends. Not only can you find simple kits and scripts online with various theme searches, there are plenty of excellent mystery kit sites that will do most or all of the work for you.

A Few Hosting Tips for Murder Mystery Night

Mystery Night Itinerary

Most ready-made murder mystery kits break down the event and have a general timeline for the event. These are the general basics of the party

Prepare the timeline: know when clues are revealed
Keep energy high: mix discussion, movement, and refreshments
Manage character participation: encourage interaction without forcing it
Debrief at the end: reveal the culprit and celebrate participation

Personal Touches

Create a few “extras” to encourage interaction and a little more competition between rounds. It’s totally up to you. For example, in the Cinco de Mayo themed murder mystery party I hosted, I created a “program” flyer for my guests, so they too, knew what to expect throughout the night. Each guest brought a signature version of a margarita for two different blind taste tests between rounds.
