The atmosphere is where an Edgar Allan Poe party really comes alive.
As a retired teacher and mom who loves creating themed events, one of my favorite parts of hosting is turning an ordinary space into something completely different. Even when an event is already planned for me, I’m probably going to make a few changes and add my own personal touches.
For my event, I leaned into the darker side of Poe while still keeping the overall look elegant and entertaining. The result was a gothic atmosphere filled with ravens, skulls, books, candles, dramatic quotes, and plenty of opportunities for guests to get involved.
Creating Memories
Many items for decor can be used for multiple events for budget friendly decor. It’s easy to dress up dollar store items to save on decor.
When the mystery’s victim is revealed, there are ways to include them throughout your event – a souvenir tee lightens the mood 😉
Depending on your character, it’s easy to dress in black clothing or use past Halloween costumes.
Dark wine goblets from a dollar store can be personalized with each mystery character’s name in vinyl. It’s both personalized, decorative and a guest party favor.

Revealing clues during each round allows for guests to play into the drama of the mystery 😂
One of my favorite parts of customizing my parties is creating the program and itinerary for the evening.
For this mystery, I glued black envelopes together in booklet form. The envelope pouch holds clues for the round. The back side of the envelope contains printed sections outlining the night’s details.
Props like crime scene markers (Amazon Link) are the best creepy touches to highlight your food items.
Repurposing an inexpensive silver cage decor by painting black was an easy project.
I couldn’t resist the black feathered crows (Amazon Link). For some reason, finding ravens is tough! These are also pretty awesome for Halloween decor too.
Use clip-on plastic ID badges (Amazon Link) highlight each person’s role and name to easily stay in character. Plus, they’re reusable for your next murder mystery party theme!

How to make the Banner
1. Print the letters you need.
Print only the pages necessary to spell your message. Cardstock will make the banner more durable.
2. Cut out the banner pieces.
Trim around each letter and punch holes near the top corners.
3. String the banner together.
Loop string, ribbon, or twine through the holes. Tie small loops or knots between the letters to keep the pieces from sliding together.
💡TIP: If you’re printing on paper, glue and mount on black construction paper or cardstock. Not only does this make the banner sturdier, but it also gives the printable a more finished appearance. Best of all, you can reuse the letters for Halloween, gothic parties, murder mysteries, and other events.
Nevermore Banner
Of course, no Edgar Allan Poe party would be complete without Nevermore. The raven’s repeated “Nevermore” is one of the most recognizable elements of Poe’s work, making it an easy phrase to incorporate into your decorations.
For an especially dramatic look, create your banner using old book pages. For this Nevermore PDF letters banner, I created a smaller page template of just those letters to print on each book page.
💡TIP: Don’t destroy a valuable or collectible book for this project. Use damaged, discarded, or inexpensive books—or simply print the design onto faux book-page paper.

Shop your house first!
Old books, picture frames, baskets, candleholders, black dishes, glass jars, fabric scraps, clocks, mirrors, and even unused Halloween decorations can become part of your Poe party.
Dollar-store finds can also be transformed with black paint, printed labels, ribbon, lace, or a little distressing.
The goal isn’t to make everything look expensive.
Instead, you’re creating the feeling that your guests have stepped into a mysterious Victorian library where something questionable may have happened.

Food is another opportunity to carry the theme throughout the event. You don’t need to create complicated recipes with elaborate names. Instead, take ordinary party foods and give them a little Poe-inspired personality.
Think dark, dramatic, mysterious, and slightly ominous.

Host a white and/or red Wine Tasting between clue rounds if you’re hosting a murder mystery party.
